According to the police, Mr Loh Chun Yan and a male friend, 20, were travelling along Hougang Avenue 8 when the rider lost control of the motorbike and it mounted the kerb. Both were thrown off the vehicle and landed on a footpath, suffering serious injuries.

The police are still investigating which of the two was the rider at the time of the accident. Mr Loh's friend has been warded at TTSH.

Mr Loh, a storeman at HQ 6 Division at Mandai Camp, had returned home on Sunday morning after he booked out from Pulau Tekong. The lance corporal was attending an army course there.

The last time his family saw him alive was at about 11am when he left their Housing Board flat in Serangoon North to go out.

Mr Loh was believed to be on the way home when the accident occurred. He was supposed to return to Pulau Tekong that night.

His father, Mr Loh Geok Chai, 45, said that his son was an obedient boy who was an avid computer game player.

'I was encouraging him to study after his national service in April next year,' said the car spare-parts salesman.

Mr Loh has a sister, 21, who is about to enter university and a brother, 11, in Primary 4. His mother, 40, is a saleswoman.
